Part of Elizabeth Alice Austen's "Street types of New York City" series, this c1896 print shows a newsboy, one of the most familiar working figures on the city's sidewalks and street corners in the late 1800s. Austen, a Staten Island photographer best known for pictures of her family and home, copyrighted the image under her own name. Newsboys sold papers for pennies, often starting young and working long hours, which is why the record also files the picture under child labor. The print offers a useful look at street commerce and at the children who depended on it.
