Few players of the era drew as much attention as Luther "Dummy" Taylor, a deaf pitcher who was in the New York Giants' rotation when this 1903 portrait was made. The nickname was a period term that modern readers will find dated, though Taylor was known for his skill and for his use of sign language to talk with teammates and umpires. He pitched in the National League for several seasons, and his career helped show that a deaf athlete could compete at the highest level of professional baseball. This photograph comes from the Bain News Service collection, which documented New York newsmakers and sports figures in the early twentieth century.
