A single printed sheet dated December 30, 1775, addressed "To the citizens of New York," survives in the Library of Congress's broadside collection. Broadsides like this were posted or handed out in streets and taverns, so they carried public appeals quickly to a wide audience. By the end of 1775, New York was divided between patriot and loyalist residents, and its royal governor, William Tryon, had already left the city for a British warship that summer. Because the caption card's details are unverified, the exact author and purpose of this address remain open to study.
