Hell Gate, the turbulent passage where the East River meets Long Island Sound, is the subject of this east view, drawn by W.A. Williams in 1775 and published in April 1778. Its appearance in *The London Magazine*, a British monthly, came during the Revolutionary War, when readers in England followed news from the American colonies closely. The etching shows the rocky shoals and tidal currents that made the strait feared by sailors, and it is worth noticing how the artist presents a working waterway as a scene of dramatic hazard.
