Rogers drew this lithograph for the February 3, 1900, supplement to *Harper's Weekly*, casting Theodore Roosevelt as "The Rough Rider," a nickname from his service with the volunteer cavalry regiment in the 1898 Spanish-American War, including the fighting at San Juan Hill. In early 1900 Roosevelt was governor of New York, and talk of him as a running mate for President William McKinley was building toward the Republican ticket that summer. The cartoon shows how the press framed that speculation: Roosevelt's military reputation and vigorous public persona made him a natural candidate for the vice presidency. Within a year, McKinley's assassination in September 1901 would carry Roosevelt into the presidency.
