Few portraits of Theodore Roosevelt from the Spanish-American War capture his public image as directly as this color lithograph, published by McLoughlin Bros. of New York around 1898. Roosevelt had recently led the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the regiment nicknamed the Rough Riders, and his charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba made him a national hero. The title plays on that nickname, presenting him in military dress as the swaggering volunteer colonel the public had come to admire. Inexpensive color prints like this one were popular with readers eager for images of the war's heroes.
