The Red Room is one of the White House's formal reception rooms, set on the State Floor and known for its crimson silk-damask walls and furnishings. Its name comes from the color scheme that has defined it for much of its history, and it has long served as a parlor where first ladies received guests and hosted tea and small gatherings. The room was redecorated several times over the years, most notably during the Kennedy and later restoration efforts, which sought to recover its early nineteenth-century character. Look closely at the furniture and fabrics to see how the space balances official ceremony with domestic comfort.
