The Red Room is one of the six state parlors on the ground floor of the White House, and this view captures it in the years when the National Photo Company was documenting the building's interiors for public and commercial sale. The room takes its name from its red silk damask wall coverings, a color chosen for the formal receptions and small gatherings held there. Photographs like this one, taken between 1909 and 1932, offer a useful record of how the room was furnished in the early twentieth century, before later restorations returned it to a decor closer to the early 1800s.
