The caption pairs Theodore Roosevelt with a man named only as "Arch. Hoxie" and places the meeting at St. Louis, a city that hosted the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, a world's fair marking the centennial of the 1803 land purchase. The record gives no date, and its title comes from information the Bain News Service recorded and that has not been verified, so the second man's identity and the occasion remain open questions. The George Grantham Bain Collection, a Library of Congress holding of news-agency glass negatives from the early twentieth century, is a useful source for Roosevelt's public appearances during his presidency.
