This glass negative is one of the Bain News Service photographs of Theodore Roosevelt, a president who traveled widely and was photographed at nearly every stop. The title "Roosevelt at St. Louis" comes from notes the news service wrote on the negative or its caption card, but those notes were never verified, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain. St. Louis hosted Roosevelt several times during his presidency, including visits tied to the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The Bain agency produced its prints for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, so the image likely served as a quick record of a public appearance.
