Buffalo, New York, is the setting here, and the record gives no date, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Theodore Roosevelt's connection to the city is well documented, most famously in September 1901, when he took the presidential oath there at the Ansley Wilcox House after William McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a set of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a press photo agency active in New York from the early 1900s. Its title was supplied by the agency and not checked against other sources, so readers may want to compare it with dated images of Roosevelt's Buffalo visits.
