Here the subject is Theodore Roosevelt himself, caught in the act of mounting an elephant, an unusual image for a sitting president. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption data written on the negative by the Bain News Service, which the Library of Congress describes as unverified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain. The Bain agency was a New York photo service that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century, and Roosevelt, known for big-game hunting and a vigorous public image, was one of its frequent subjects.
