Few sports suited Theodore Roosevelt's restless energy better than the fast, hard-riding game of polo, though this glass negative does not record the exact occasion. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, documented many public figures at outdoor events, but the title here comes from unverified caption data, so it may reflect the agency's own labeling rather than a confirmed match. Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, cultivated an active outdoor life, and pictures like this one show how the public was encouraged to see him: vigorous, athletic, and often in motion.
