Few details in this record set this picture apart from its neighbors on the board. The title, "Roosevelt at Washington," is recorded as unverified data supplied by the Bain News Service, so the subject and setting are a probable reading rather than a confirmed one. The image survives as a small glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's agency sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and Theodore Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, was one of its most frequently photographed subjects. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium for press work of that era, so the negative itself is a useful record of how such pictures were made.
