Edward Everett, the Massachusetts orator, statesman and former Harvard president, is the figure this portrait keeps in view, though the caption card gives no date and the notes flag its information as unverified. Everett had a long public career: he served in Congress, as governor of Massachusetts, as secretary of state under Millard Fillmore, and as a U.S. senator, and he was among the best-known public speakers of the mid-nineteenth century. He is also remembered for the two-hour oration he delivered at Gettysburg in November 1863, which preceded Abraham Lincoln's brief address. Because the print is undated, its exact age is uncertain, but Everett's prominence spanned several decades of photography.
