This print shows financier J. Pierpont Morgan, who ran one of the most powerful banking houses in the country, swinging a cane at a photographer. Morgan was notoriously impatient with the press and often resisted having his picture taken, so an image of him menacing a camera operator became a rare visual record of his temper. The picture dates from May 1910, when illustrated newspapers and photo agencies were expanding quickly and cameras were more portable than ever. Its value lies in showing the tension between powerful figures and the photographers trying to document them.
