Few buildings in New York are as recognizable as the main branch of the Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, shown here in a view from about 1933. Opened in 1911 to designs by Carrère and Hastings, the Beaux-Arts marble building replaced the old Croton Reservoir on the site, and its flanking stone lions have become city icons. The print carries the copyright notice of Irving Underhill, Inc., a firm that issued commercial city views, and it shows the library during the Depression years, when it remained a busy public resource.
