Fifth Avenue at East 70th Street was home to the Lenox Library, which housed the book collection of James Lenox and opened to the public in 1877. This c1905 photoprint, copyrighted by A. Loeffler of Tompkinsville, New York, shows the building about ten years after its collection was absorbed into the New York Public Library in 1895. The Lenox building was later demolished in 1912 to make way for the Frick mansion, so the photograph records a library that no longer stands.
