This photoprint shows the New York City residence of William C. Whitney, a financier and former U.S. Secretary of the Navy under Grover Cleveland. The image dates to about 1894, the height of the Gilded Age, when wealthy families built large townhouses in Manhattan and commissioned photographers to record them. The print was issued by J.S. Johnston of New York, whose house views of this kind were sold as keepsakes and reference images. The catalog record carries unverified details from its original caption card, so the exact address and date should be checked against other sources.
