Among the many Gilded Age mansions photographed in New York, this view shows the residence of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a member of the family whose railroad and shipping fortunes shaped much of the city's wealth. Vanderbilt family houses were concentrated along Fifth Avenue in the 1880s and 1890s, when the city's richest households built large stone residences there. The print was issued by the photographer J.S. Johnston, who copyrighted it and numbered it 3009, which suggests it was one of a series sold to the public. The details come from an unverified caption card, so the exact house and date are worth confirming.
