The United States Capitol, shown here in a large-format glass negative made around 1902, is the building itself rather than a street view or crowd scene, and the record ties it to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American landmarks in the early twentieth century. The company's negative log and copyright marks show it was cataloged as a commercial view, part of a wide effort to document the nation's major buildings. The 18 by 22 inch plate gives the image a sharp, detailed quality, and the Capitol's dome and wings would have been a common subject for such photographers in that era.
