The sitter is Sophie Blanchard, shown at the moment of an evening balloon ascent she made in Milan on 15 August 1811, before members of the ruling family. The caption ties the portrait to that specific public flight rather than presenting it as a generic likeness. Blanchard was the widow of the balloonist Jean-Pierre Blanchard, and she built her own reputation for night flights and daring displays that drew crowds across Europe. The print combines lithography with stipple engraving, a mix that let printmakers of the period render soft tonal shading in faces and clothing. It offers a useful view of how aeronauts were presented to audiences during the Napoleonic era.
