Titled *globo aerostatico*, or aerostatic balloon, this image belongs to the years when lighter-than-air flight first captured the public imagination. In June 1783 Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier sent an unmanned hot-air balloon aloft at Annonay, France, and by December Jacques Charles and Nicolas Robert had flown a hydrogen balloon from Paris. Those flights set off a craze across France and beyond, and pictures of the new machines reached viewers who would never see one overhead.
