This etching is particular for its record of a specific flight: a balloon the title gives as 40 palmi in diameter, launched in Rome on July 8, 1788, by Vincenzo Lunardi from the amphitheater the title calls the "Anfiteatro Correa." Lunardi, an Italian aeronaut who had earlier flown in England, drew large crowds to such ascents, and the print was sold at a Rome shop near the Pasquino statue, a well-known gathering spot for printed news and satire. Prints like this one spread word of the flight to people who could not attend, and they show how quickly balloon flight had become a public spectacle in late eighteenth-century Europe.
