Few visitors to the Artillery Ground in London on 15 September 1784 forgot the sight of Vincenzo Lunardi's hydrogen balloon lifting off, and this print shows the craft and its attached car, ropes and fittings, the "appendages" of the title. Lunardi, an Italian who had come to Britain as secretary to the Neapolitan envoy, made the first balloon ascent in England that day and came down in Hertfordshire, a little over two hours later. His flight drew enormous crowds and a flood of prints, songs and souvenirs, and it set off a brief but intense ballooning craze in Britain.
