Few balloon designs of the early nineteenth century show how inventors hoped to steer their craft, and this watercolour pairs a gas envelope with rowing-style sails and a car slung beneath it. Makers of the period believed that oars or sails might push a balloon against the wind, though no such device could overcome the basic fact that a balloon drifts with the air around it. The sketch belongs to the wider British enthusiasm for aerial travel, which followed Charles Green's long-distance flights from London in the 1830s and inspired many proposals for "navigable" balloons.
