The engraved plate shows the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon alongside Jean-Pierre Blanchard's craft, two rival designs from the early years of human flight in France. Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier made the first public ascent of a crewed hot-air balloon in Paris in 1783, and their success set off a craze across Europe for aerial voyages. Blanchard, a French inventor, soon pursued his own experiments with hydrogen gas and later crossed the English Channel by balloon in 1785. Engravings like this one circulated widely, giving the public a look at machines that were, at the time, still a novelty.
