Katisha, the scornful elder noblewoman who pursues the hero Nanki-Poo, is the figure singled out in this 1885 poster, which uses her name as its caption. The operetta, by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, opened in London that spring and was set in an imaginary Japan, in step with the fashion for Japanese design in Western art and decoration. The bold color woodcut, printed by the Jno. B. Jeffery Printing and Engraving Company of Chicago, shows how American theater posters of the period borrowed that style to sell an exotic production.
