Pooh-Bah, the pompous official who holds every office in the fictional town of Titipu, is the figure named in the caption of this tall color poster. *The Mikado* opened at London's Savoy theater in March 1885 and became one of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's biggest hits, running for more than 600 performances. Its Japanese setting was imaginary, shaped by the Japonisme fashion then popular in Britain and America, and the show's costumes and imagery drew heavily on that craze. The Chicago firm of Jno. B. Jeffery printed this advertisement, which shows how eagerly American audiences took up the production's look.
