The Mikado was first staged in London in 1885, and this tall color woodcut poster, about 207 by 107 centimeters, advertises a production of it with a central figure captioned "Yum Yum," one of the operetta's leading roles. The poster was printed by the Jno. B. Jeffery Printing and Engraving Company of Chicago, an American firm that produced theatrical advertising. Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, set in a fictional Japanese town, drew heavily on the Victorian craze for things Japanese, and its costumes and staging became a model for later depictions. The poster's central area is damaged, with pieces missing, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the image.
