Few civic buildings of the early republic were as closely tied to the nation's finances as the Customs House on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. William Strickland designed the Greek Revival structure, which was begun in 1818 as the home of the Second Bank of the United States. After the bank's federal charter ended in 1836, the government later took over the building for customs business. This albumen transparency, made around 1850, shows the building during that period. Albumen transparencies were glass-plate positives meant to be viewed with light shining through them, so their clarity and tonal range are part of what makes them worth studying.
