Downtown F Street was the setting for this view of the Woodward & Lothrop store, a department store that became one of the best-known retailers in Washington, D.C. The National Photo Company made thousands of street and storefront views of the capital in the years before and after 1920, documenting a city whose commercial core was then expanding quickly. The record gives the date only as a range, and the title is noted as unverified, so the exact building shown is worth checking against the store's history. The glass negative also shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating.
