Ninth Street storefront of M.A. Leese, recorded in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass plate, which the record dates to sometime between 1910 and 1926. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets, shops and public life in those years. Glass negatives were the standard medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes on the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coating, so the image preserves both a view of early twentieth-century storefront design and the physical wear of its age.
