Two of the first women to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives appear together in this 1929 glass negative, which the Library of Congress dates to June 4 of that year. Ruth Bryan Owen, a Florida Democrat and daughter of William Jennings Bryan, and Ruth Hanna McCormick, an Illinois Republican, both took their seats in Congress that spring after winning election in 1928. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio known for news portraits of officials, made the image. The record notes that the title comes from unverified data, and the streaks and blemishes on the plate come from age in the original coatings.
