Few pictures on this board capture two household names together, and this one pairs General John J. Pershing with the Yankees slugger Babe Ruth on May 28, 1924, as the date in the title suggests. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that documented public figures and events in the early twentieth century, and it survives as a glass negative. The record notes that the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass plates of this kind often show streaks and blemishes from the breakdown of their coatings, so the surface wear is worth noticing alongside the subject.
