In this drawing, John Bull, the personification of Britain, and Uncle Sam, the personification of the United States, stand together in an empty landscape under the title "In the middle of nowhere!" The record's genre note suggests the joke is about a peace conference that apparently never took place. Published on November 6, 1953, the cartoon reflects the Cold War, when Western allies often disagreed about whether and how to negotiate with the Soviet Union. Cartoonists of the period relied on familiar national figures and sparse settings to make a point quickly, and here the bare, featureless ground is part of the joke. The India ink, black crayon, and white highlights give the scene a stark, graphic clarity.
