Roberts drew this chancel of St. Helena's church inside the sprawling Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the complex that Christian tradition holds marks the site of Christ's crucifixion and burial. The Scottish painter David Roberts traveled through the Levant in 1838 and 1839, and he made detailed sketches on the spot that later served as the basis for this color lithograph. Louis Haghe translated them into stone for *The Holy Land*, published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. The plate shows how the church's interior looked to a European visitor of the period, when the building's dim, crowded spaces drew pilgrims from many traditions.
