The cabin at the center of this picture stands within Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in southwestern Indiana, a site set aside to recall the years Abraham Lincoln spent there as a young man. Lincoln's family arrived in the area in 1816, when he was seven, and they lived in a simple dwelling of this kind while he grew from childhood into his teens. The memorial's reconstructed cabins are meant to suggest the rough frontier homes of that era, built from logs with a single main room and a loft. Its modest scale is worth noticing, since it reflects the hard, rural life that shaped Lincoln's early years.
