The building in this view is the Petersen House on Tenth Street, the boarding house where Abraham Lincoln was carried after he was shot at Ford's theater across the street on April 14, 1865. He died there the next morning in a back bedroom, and the house is now part of the Ford's theater National Historic Site. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that photographed the city's buildings in the years around 1918 to 1920. The glass may show streaks from natural deterioration of its coating.
