Few documents from that week carry the urgency of this reward notice, which offers $100,000 for the capture of the man who shot Abraham Lincoln at Ford's theater on April 14, 1865. Issued by the War Department, it names John Wilkes Booth and the men accused of aiding him, and it was posted widely as the manhunt spread through Maryland and Virginia. Booth was shot and killed at a Virginia farm less than two weeks later, but the poster captures the fear and uncertainty of those first days, when the nation did not yet know how far the conspiracy reached.
