A closeup from 1937 shows workers cutting into the granite of Mount Rushmore, where Lincoln's head was taking shape on the mountain's face. Lincoln was the third president carved there, placed to the right of Washington, whose face had been dedicated in 1930. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum directed the project in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and crews worked from a scaled model and used dynamite to remove most of the rock before finer hand work. The picture captures the close, dangerous labor behind a monument now seen from miles away.
