A boy stretched out before a hearth in a one-room log cabin is exactly the scene the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in southern Indiana was created to evoke. The Lincoln family lived on this land from 1816 to 1830, and young Abraham is remembered as a determined reader who studied by the fire after his chores were done, borrowing books wherever he could find them. Accounts gathered later by his law partner William Herndon describe him working sums and copying passages onto boards and even a shovel blade. The picture captures the realities of a frontier household, where light came from the hearth and learning depended on patience.
