Charles Léandre's color lithograph portrays Cecil Rhodes, the British mining magnate and former prime minister of the Cape Colony, as a caricature in the style of a French satirical weekly. It ran on the cover of *Le Rire*, no. 276, in February 1900, during the Second Boer War, when Rhodes was closely tied to the siege of Kimberley, which had been lifted shortly before. Léandre was one of the best-known caricaturists of his day, and Rhodes, whose firm De Beers dominated the diamond trade, was a natural subject for European satire at the time.
