Rather than a scene, this piece is a calendar designed as a poster, meant to hang on a wall and show the full year's dates for 1898. Boston lithographer L. Prang issued it, and the design is credited to Louis John Rhead (1857-1926), an English-born illustrator who worked for American publishers in the 1890s. Printed around 1896, it shows how far ahead publishers planned their color work for the coming year. Its bold, graphic style reflects the poster enthusiasm of that decade.
