Few poster subjects from the 1890s were as specific as this one: a color lithograph of golf, issued as a calendar by the New York publisher R.H. Russell. Edward Penfield, one of the most admired American poster artists of the period, designed it, and the Library of Congress holds a separate original drawing for the image. Golf was still new in the United States in 1899, so a calendar built around the sport would have appealed to a small audience of players and club members. The caption card's tobacco tag is unverified and may reflect a later advertising use.
