The question in the title, "What shall she do with it?", is the point of this cover: a young woman holds an official ballot, and the painting asks what she will do with the new right it represents. James Montgomery Flagg, best known for his Uncle Sam recruiting poster, painted it for the cover of *Leslie's Illustrated Weekly* in August 1920, as women's suffrage was nearing final ratification. The 19th Amendment was certified later that month, and the cover captures the national mood of anticipation before women could vote in a presidential election across the country. The color halftone reproduction let a mass-circulation magazine carry the painting's bright palette to a wide readership.
