Printed in color for a German periodical around 1917 or 1918, this Benz advertisement by Carl Kreuzer of Frankfurt stands out from the plainer automobile notices of its day. Benz & Cie., founded in Mannheim in 1883, had built some of the earliest practical gasoline automobiles, and by the war years its name carried that pioneering reputation. Germany's wartime economy shifted automobile production toward military needs, so civilian car advertising like this one shows a company trying to keep its name before buyers while private motoring was restricted. Color halftone was expensive to produce, so the printing itself suggested the prestige the company hoped to claim.
