This color halftone advertisement promotes Benz automobiles and aircraft engines, printed in a German periodical in November or December 1918. Its pairing of car and aviation products reflects how Benz, like other German manufacturers, had turned much of its production toward wartime engines, including the powerplants used in military aircraft. The ad appeared as the war was ending, when companies were working out how to sell their wartime technology to a civilian market. The record credits the design to Behrmann, and the piece is a useful look at how German firms presented engineering and speed to the public in the immediate postwar period.
