The Alpine road poster for the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railway (PLM) turns a motoring route into an invitation to travel. Posters like this one were produced in the early twentieth century, when the car was still a novelty for most people and tourism was growing quickly in France. Promoting the mountain passes of the Alps as a scenic drive showed how railway companies and automobile enthusiasts were beginning to share the same ideas about leisure. Look closely at the sweeping roadway and the open landscape, which were chosen to make the car seem like a way to discover the country.
