Few early motor contests drew as much attention as the Vanderbilt Cup, and this print documents the 1904 race on Long Island, a event that William K. Vanderbilt Jr. created to test automobiles on a closed road course. The image is an enlargement from a motion picture made by the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, so its softness and grain come from film frames rather than a still camera. The record comes from an older caption card and has not been fully verified, so specific details of the moment shown should be read with some caution. Even so, it offers a rare look at how the new sport was recorded in its first decade.
